How a private language lesson works
The first lesson is for taking stock: your level, your goal and the time you have. The tutor then suggests a pace, often one or two one-hour sessions a week, and a programme to match: conversation, grammar, exam practice or the vocabulary of your job.
Face to face, the tutor comes to your home or you meet at theirs or in a library. By video call, you meet on a platform with materials shared on screen and no journey. Either way, what makes you progress is regularity and speaking time: in a one-to-one lesson, you speak far more than in a group.
How much does a language tutor cost in 2026?
A private tutor who comes to your home usually charges between £25 and £45 an hour outside London, depending on the language, their experience and the level you are aiming for; London rates run higher. A language school charges £40 to £70 an hour for one-to-one teaching, but group courses cost much less per hour.
Online, rates range from under £10 to around £35 an hour, with a discounted first lesson. Council adult learning services and further education colleges run evening classes at modest prices, and ESOL courses for eligible adults can be free.
Language school, local teacher or online platform: which suits you?
A language school offers a framework: placement test, programme, evening classes and exam sessions. A local independent tutor follows your pace and can come to your home. An online platform offers the widest choice: native tutors of every language, very wide hours, often lower prices and the option to switch tutor.
The three combine well: many adults take an intensive course at a school, then keep up their level with a tutor by video call. Start from your goal and pick the format that serves it.

Questions about learning a language with a tutor
Do I need any level before booking a private language lesson?
No. One-to-one lessons suit complete beginners too: the tutor starts from scratch, explains in English if needed and moves at your pace. It is the most comfortable way to start a language without feeling lost in a group.
Can adults really learn a new language from scratch?
Yes. Adults learn grammar and vocabulary efficiently and usually know exactly why they are learning, which keeps them going. Regular lessons and a little daily practice matter far more than age.
Are the schools listed here linked to the online tutoring platform?
No. The listings come from open places data and are given for information only. The trial lesson buttons lead to an independent partner platform with no link to these businesses.
